What is MBBS?

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) course is 5.5 years undergraduate degree with 4.5 years of course study and 1 year of mandatory internship in various fields of medicine.

The course is divided into 9 semesters in which one will gain an overview of various MBBS subjects like anatomy, pediatrics, biochemistry, and many other subjects during the whole course.

The syllabus, prescribed in such a way that MBBS degree holders can choose a specialization for further majoring and practicing medicine. The career specializations for MBBS students are Nephrology, Cardiology, Gynecology, Anesthesiology, Organ Transplant, Endocrine, and General Surgery, etc.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must have passed Class XII/higher secondary/pre-university qualifying examination with Science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Zoology/Botany. They also must have studied English as the main subject for their qualifying examination.
  • Moreover, candidates also need to fulfil the age limit criteria i.e. they must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admissions.
  • There are additional eligibility conditions as mentioned by the regulatory authorities for MBBS i.e. Medical Council of India (MCI).

BDS


B.D.S. / Bachelor of Dental Surgery 

B.D.S. or Bachelor of Dental Surgery is an undergraduate Dentistry course. The duration of Bachelor of Dental Surgery course is 4 years regular study followed by 1 year of internship. After M.B.B.S., Bachelor of Dental Surgery is one the most sought after course in the field of medical science. B.D.S. enables one to become a Dentist. The curriculum of BDS is being regulated by the Dental Council of India (DCI).

Information on eligibility, admission procedure, exams, fee and other details is given below.

BDS: BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) is an undergraduate course for five years duration. Under this degree duration, four years will be for theory and one year will be for internship on rotation basis in every department. Dental Council of India (DCI) regulates dental education in the country.

Eligibility: Candidates have to fulfill the specified criteria in terms of nationality, age limit if any, qualifying exam, pass percentage, and more. In addition, they must also qualify NEET .

  • For NEET candidates belonging from the general category must have to obtain a minimum of 50th percentile, for SC/ST/OBC candidates 40th percentile and candidates with locomotor disability 45th percentile.
  • Candidates have to pass a recognized Higher/Senior Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination equivalent to 10+2 Higher/Senior Secondary Examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology. Unreserved candidates and OCI, NRI, foreign candidates must have secured at least 50% in their qualifying exam in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/ Biotechnology and candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes or Other Backward Classes (OBC)must have secured 40%.
  • Candidates must have completed 17 years at the time of admission or before December 31 of the year of admission.

A wide variety of career choices is open for students after BDS. The most obvious choice would be to practice as a dentist. An important point is that students must register with the Dental Council of India to be able to practice as a dentist. Some of the career options are mentioned below:

  • Set up private practice: A common option followed by many dentists who have passed and registered themselves with the Dental Council of India. This will require some amount of funds and a good location. It also will take sometime before the dentists can establish themselves.

BUMS (Unani)

Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery is a 5 year course. Eligibility for the course is 10+2, intermediate cleared. Admissions for such course are on the basis of counseling after clearing entrance tests depending on the colleges. Unani is the fourth most popular medication system in India after the allopathic, Ayurveda and homeopathic system. According to this system there are four elements in human body as the Blood, Phlegm, yellow bile and the black bile. This is similar to the Ayurveda in term of the four elements and as popular as the Ayurveda.

Eligibility 

  • The basic eligibility criteria for pursuing Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery (BUMS) course is a pass degree in Higher Secondary Examination or 10+2 in Science stream with subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum of 50% marks from a recognized college or university.

The Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery is overlooked by the Ministry of AYUSH under the Government of India. Therefore the course structure and the subjects that are covered under the course have been designed by experts in the Ministry.   • Candidates must have cleared class 12 board examination from any recognised board of education in the stream of science.

A chemical technician is responsible for processing chemicals and writing reports.

Drug Inspector: A drug inspector is an individual who has the authority and is qualified to supervise the manufacturing of medical drugs. It is the responsibility of a drug inspector to monitor the safety, utility, and efficiency of the drug which has been manufactured before it is being sold at the counter. It is their primary responsibility to ensure the quality of the drug.

Health Inspector: As a health inspector the individual must investigate various drugs that are deemed harmful for human consumption. It is their duty to eliminate any drugs, that might prove harmful for use by human beings. Health inspectors often look into the complaints and other health concerns, such as keeping a tab on harmful and expired drugs.

Pharmacist: Those who have completed their B. Pharma can also become pharmacists. The primary responsibility of a pharmacist is to provide prescribed medicine or drugs to the patients. Doctor of Pharmacy


Doctor of Pharmacy /Pharm. D.

Pharm. D. is a 6- year doctorate level course, including five years of academic study and a year of internship or residency. The course aims to prepare eligible candidates students in the management of patient medication therapy and improving patient outcomes.   Pharm. D. is a latin term which means pharmaciae doctor.

It is a registered qualification under pharmacy act, 1948. The course was introduced by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), regulatory body for pharmacy education in India. The course is generally meant for students who have interest in learning of concepts related to clinical research and acquire an in-depth understanding of pharmacy practice concepts. 

Also, such professionals take on a number of tasks that MBBS graduates perform, such as monitoring patients, diagnosing diseases, etc.

Candidates interested in pursuing the course are required to meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • A minimum aggregate score of 55% at both Higher and Senior Secondary levels (classes 10thand 12th) completed from a recognized educational Board.
